The Commune
Located in the bustling quarter of Toul Kork, the Commune is a six storey building housing restaurants, boutique offices and 58 apartments. Drawing from the typology of Circular villages found throughout China and South East Asia, it takes the form of six low-rise, intimately scaled blocks / houses aggregated around a communal courtyard. Settling into a street of predominantly small to mid scaled buildings, the Commune stands in contrast to the the tide of generic highrises flooding the historical city of Phnom Penh.

A Charged Courtyard
The groundplane, conceived as an extension of the street, is porous and open, populated with cafes, bars and restaurants surrounding the inner courtyard. This vibrant public realm folds up to level 1, connected by terracing spanish steps – forming a new town square where the local community can gather, share meal, enjoy a movie under the open sky.
